I Want You
for the Habitat for Humanity 2008 Build

We are partnering with Westminster Presbyterian and John Knox Presbyterian build a house beginning April 3, 2008. The home will be built in Greer SC. The build will be mainly on weekends and last approximately 8 weeks. Download the building schedule by clicking here.

DIRECTIONS TO THE HABITAT BUILD: The location of the home we are building is 316 E Miter Saw Ct, Greer, SC. The mapping websites are not current enough to recognize this new development. The simplest instructions are Wade Hampton (29) toward Greer, right onto 290 (Poinsett Street) into and through historic Greer, right onto South Line Street as you’re exiting town turn left onto Snow Street, when it ends, turn right onto Old Woodruff Road, make your first left onto Peter McCord. Come into development until the road ends and turn left onto Miter Saw Court, the house is in cul-de-sac on the right.

We will need approximately 20 volunteers per day to meet our congregation’s commitment to this mission project. Please plan to volunteer and come out to the site at least twice. If you need to split the day up (on a Friday, for example) then by all means do so, otherwise please try to commit the better part of a full day when possible. Volunteers who work at least 2 shifts will receive a t-shirt to commemorate their work and participation. Give your t-shirt size to either Kevin Greene or Hugh McVeety or send your size to Hugh via e-mail (hmcveety@charter.net). Volunteers who are between the ages of 16 and 18 must be accompanied by a parent.

Volunteer jobs include the following:

Frame Construction
Painting
Clean-up
Roofing
Siding
Trim carpentry
Landscaping
Work with the family on budgeting, decorating, etc.
Baby sitting
Make sandwiches or lunch for the crew
Telephone reminders to volunteers
Plus many more opportunities

Ed's Weekly Update

NOTE THIS: THE LAST WORK DAY THIS WEEK WILL BE FRIDAY, APRIL 25. THE NEXT SCHEDULED WORK DAY WILL BE THE WEEKEND OF MAY 16 AND 17.

April 18 - 19, 2008

The shingles are up and we are dried in. We will have one more work day, Friday April 25 will be the last work day for a couple of weeks. We are ahead of schedule and the sub-contractors need to come in and do their thing.

April 11 -12, 2008

Weekend 2 of the project went great with no rain outs and volunteers from all churches were busy. We completed sheathing the roof and have half of it “papered” and ready for shingles.

“Taila” the young lady whom the house is being built for was on hand and working and seems a pleasure to all who meet her. She has a 2 year old little boy who she and her family have nicknamed “Moo” (his given name is “Quamiyeh”) Tila is a very dedicated mother on behalf of him.

We now have approximately 120 volunteer hours at the build site, additionally the phone callers working in recruitment / reminding and the lunch baggers have spent countless hours beyond that.

Fourth Church is on it’s way to making another successful Habitat build a reality, please consider signing up to come out to the build site and be apart of this mission, your help is both needed and greatly appreciated.

April 3 - 5, 2008

The first weekend of actual construction went very well.  We had ample volunteers from all churches involved. We framed the house and would have completed setting roof trusses but were rained out on Saturday, 4-5-08.  The rain delay does not seem to be of concern to the Habitat management.

I met the lady we are building the house for and she seems very deserving and very appreciative.

We had approximately 61 volunteer hours exclusive of the hours that the phone callers have spent calling. We should be very pleased with the commitment of Fourth Presbyterian Church.

Call if you need me. Thanks.
